A Comparison of Heat Transfer Requirement and Evaporator Cost for MED-TC and MSF

Abstract: The two most common steam driven technologies used for seawater distillation between 500 TPD to 10,000 TPD are Multiple Stage Flash (MSF) and low temperature Multiple Effect Distillation (MED). The differences between the two types of technology are derived from the difference in the method of heat transfer. The seawater is sensibly heated in the tubes in MSF and boiled in a thin film on the tubes in MED. The impact of the different methods of heat transfer on the heat transfer surface requirements is the subject of this paper.
